FINKS BASIN CEMETERY
Route 169 near Route 5S
TOWN OF DANUBE
HERKIMER COUNTY, N.Y.

This cemetery is located just off the east shoulder of route 169 about 100 yards north of route 5S in the town of Danube and not far from the Herkimer Homestead State Historic Site. The cemetery is below the level of the road and not easily visible. This cemetery appears to have been completely abandoned except that someone has recently cleared out the trees and brush. About a dozen stones remain standing. Others are broken and illegible. Some graves appear to be marked with ordinary fieldstones.

Youngs, John, died Nov. 20, 1854 aged 66 years, 6 months, 27 days

Youngs, Margaret, wife of John Youngs, died April 17, 1848 in the 63rd year of her age

John Youngs was the oldest son of Barney Young (1766-1842), a Revolutionary War soldier and longtime resident of German Flats. Only these two stones were copied. The Cemetery Card Index in the Herkimer County Historical Society contains card entries for these stones so possibly the other stones have also been copied at some time.

If anyone in the area is looking for a project, this cemetery could certainly use some tender, loving care.
