1847 & 1849 Marriages and Deaths

of the

Town of Danube

These listings of vital records for the Town of Danube for 1847 & 1849 were digitally prepared by volunteer BetteJo Caldwell from photocopies of typescripts provided to her. The transcriptions of the original records came from Volume 357 (1970-71) of the miscellaneous unpublished records of the New York State D.A.R., available for your perusal at the main branch of the New York City Public Library, at the State Library in Albany, NY, and at the D.A.R. Library in Washington, D.C. We hope this list provides clues to ancestral location and helps you better formulate questions when visiting Mohawk Valley societies or ordering mail searches. If you recognize anyone on this list, please drop a line to Martha so we can note it on this page.

As you scan the listings you'll see unusual spellings. They're not typos but can be attributed to well-known difficulties in reading fragile records with old handwriting, as well as assumptions made by the registrars at the time of registration. If a spelling differs from that of your ancestral surname, or marriages and deaths didn't take place in the town you thought your ancestors were from, don't pass them by. Jot them down...just in case. A date and location from these vital records can be used to search in the 1850 census or the info may turn out useful to others searching your surnames.

During years 1847 - 1850 some New York State counties officially recorded information about births, marriages and deaths. Then they just stopped. Not all towns recorded or preserved this early information so each town/county must be taken on a case-by-case basis. Required death registration didn't start in New York State until the early 1880s, over 30 years after the 1847 - 1849 events were recorded, and wasn't really enforced until just after 1900.

November 27, 2006, feedback from researcher Julia Carver Lee!

I recognize that Jane Van Allen and Richard Carver are my Great-great-great grandparents on my paternal side. They migrated to (or just passed through) Wisconsin, definitely to Somenauk, IL as evidenced by the Federal 1860 Census of IL and then on to Webster and Calhoun County Iowa: they established an Iowa branch of this Herkimer family.

Jane is a daughter of Francis Van Allen and Catherine Ausman and Richard is a son of Henry Carver and Francis "Fanny" Lotridge. See the Lotridge family cemetery on your website for others who this Richard Carver is connected to.

Jane Van Allen Carver died in Manson, IA on March 22, 1913. Her husband Richard Carver died in Manson, IA on Dec. 29, 1922. He was recounted as an old pioneer in his obit in the local Manson, IA newspaper.

June 8, 2001, feedback from researcher Jackie Humphrey!

I have listed in my Gaylor mss that HIRAM Fox m. Hannah Fake ca 1849/50, from evidence I researched on census and cem. records of Danube. (Hiram may have d. 1889). You have HENRY Fox m. Hannah Fake 1849. Do you think that the name Henry was confused and should be Hiram?

Indian Castle Cem online lists Hiram Fox 1821-18?9; Hannah Fake wf of Hiram Fox 1822-1900.

This is what I have:

Hiram was s/o Jacob Christopher Fox and Catherine Gaylor. Her surname has many different spellings - including Caler, Kieler, Kaler, Keler, Kehler, Gehler, Geler, Galard, Gaylord. They were married 9 Jan 1820 Ref. Dutch Ch. Minden Tnp, Ft. Plain Montg. Co. NY.

Cath. Gaylor was b. 1800 and d. 1 June 1883. She was d/o Philip Gaylor and Margaret ___ of Stone Arabia NY Trinity Luth. Church, Palatine Bridge NY. (Philip is listed as Gaylor on census, but church recs have variant sp.)

Jacob C. Fox was b. 7 March 1794, Palatine NY, bpt St. Johnsville Dutch ref. Ch. 13 March. He was s/o Christopher Wm. Fox and Mgt. Nellis.

Hannah Fake b. 2 Sep 1822, d. 1900 was d/o George and Catherine Fake/Fikel/Faiks of Geisenberg NY.

I have sev. ch for Jacob C. and Catherine Gaylor Fox:
1. Alexander
2. HIRAM ( or Henry as you label him; he was Hiram on census recs)
3. Martin
4. Clark
5. Jacob C. Jr. and
6. another ch. in between who d. at 3 mo. of age. Possibly more children. Hope this helps.

Jackie Humphrey, Gaylor desc.
