MURPHYJohn CharlesJohn Charles Murphy was an Irish Catholic immigrant who arrived in Newport in Herkimer County in about 1851, at about age 16. There he learned the blacksmithing trade as an apprentice blacksmith. In about 1856,he moved to Montello, Wisconsin, and married, in nearby St. Marie, WI, Margaret Gorey, also recently arrived there from Newport. He lived in Montello for the rest of his life, serving that community as a blacksmith and wagonmaker, building on the skills he acquired as an apprentice in Newport.Tom Pender
