BOARD MEETINGS OF SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 9
1919 - 1955

Town of Herkimer
Herkimer County, New York

Old School #9

In 1856 School District No. 9 was officially opened with the completion of the red brick schoolhouse on land donated by Mr. Petry who lived on adjoining property. Although the school was in use for many years, no official school records are found until the date of May 6, 1919. These records are in the schoolhouse located on the Middleville Rd. (Rte. 28) just outside the village of Herkimer. Over the doorway is a plaque signifying E. N. Thayer was the builder in 1856. (Plaque is hidden behind tree limb.) The entrance is actually off Route 28 on Farber Lane, which circles around and exits back to Route 28.

This quaint brick building, which was the schoolhouse, is now owned by George Anderson, who built his family home on adjacent land. The old schoolhouse now houses Mr. Anderson's phonograph collection and is called "The Phony Shop". Mr. Anderson kindly gave his permission to transcribe and post the minutes on this site.

Below are the entries I personally transcribed from the original journal for School Board Meetings. Spelling, abbreviations and punctuation are as written in the Journal. Meetings were held in April or May of each year.
