Norwich Corners Schoolhouse

Norwich Corners School District #3
By Betsy Voorhees

Many children attended this one room schoolhouse over the years at Norwich Corners in the Town of Litchfield. I recently found out I am a grandniece to Lohna Davis who taught school here. Lohna was born in 1887, and died during the flu epidemic in 1919. I have another picture of Lohna. However, I thought it was more fitting to use this 1912 class photo of the eighteen children in her class. Hopefully, other readers might find someone in their family represented in this picture.

By 1945 there were 27 pupils attending classes with one teacher teaching the first six grades. After the New York State Department of Education took over, most of the one-room school houses similar to this one were closed and the neighboring children taken by bus to larger community schools.

The picture included here was taken in 1915 four years before Lohna Davis died from the flu epidemic sweeping the countryside. Lohna Davis' (Davies) schoolchildren were heartbroken to learn Lohna was seriously ill and succumbed from the flu.

This school building was located on Roberts Road next to where the Paddock family ran their farm and which farm was later sold to the Jury family.
