West Winfield High School Register of Alumni 1915-1916

This listing is from the West Winfield High School Annual Catalogue, 1915-1916 (29th yr), found in the West Winfield Public Library's genealogy section. (Editor's note - the High School is not to be confused with the "original" West Winfield Academy or Seminary. According to local histories, the Academy, one of only three in Herkimer county in 1860, was begun in 1850 and continued until it merged into a Union Free School in 1884. However to add to the confusion, the High School was often referred to as the "Academy" since it was built in the same location - Academy St.)

Some additional information regarding the alumni from the Catalogue follows: Since the High School has been organized with a four year's academic course of study as laid out by the Regent's Department, 204 students have been graduated. In 1889 an Alumni Association was organized. In 1903 the Association was merged with the Academy Reunion Association, which included all who attended the old West Winfield Academy before a definite course of study had been required. (Unfortunately, none of those alumni are listed here.)

The sources, besides the catalogue, which I used for info about the school history are recent:

"Intimate History of Winfield" by Thomas Smith (deceased). He was the former Winfield Historian and worked on the book over a 20 year span. It is written in a "folksy" manner going up and down the streets of town. Unless you know where somebody lived or where a business was, it is hard to follow.........unless, of course, you have access to the index, again prepared by our friend, Marie. The book was published in 1979. He drew on some of the usual histories (ex. Beers, Hardin), his own historical materials, and plenty of personal interviews.

The Village of West Winfield Centennial Book compiled by the Village of West Winfield Centennial Committee, published in 1998. It draws on a variety of sources, from Smith's book, newspaper articles, organizational records and personal knowledge.
